Magnificent Milestones at Malin Head


On our penultimate evening, the plan of action for the final stage was uncovered, involving team tactics and transport manipulations.


After a good nights sleep of at least 4 hours, we chose our weapons for the final showdown... including the Beast(with room for the groceries) and the Garden Gate(on wheels).. which in the history of this 99ers tour in it's 10 years.. this was to be the oldest bike to have completed the M2M challenge...

.....Alighted our transport and ready to go...




The rain threatened, and tried to dampen the mood... 

and despite Chris's ears being sensitive to our lilting tones with some singing we brought back the sunshine,

A welcomed reception in Malin Town, made us feel like royalty arriving home after our long journey.. meeting some old friends






 

 We began the final ascent, to conquer the moutainous Malin Head.. the final frontier


















With Some Grim Determination... and Team  Work.... we made it....


Even Brendan and Tom were pushing so hard for the finish that their chain broke but this did not deter them one bit in completing their challenge.... nothing was gonna stop them :)

We did it, we made it, we came we saw we conquered it...






 No..... is this conor celebrating by eating.? Surely not!? Carb Loading for next year perhaps??


















the journey was amazing,
many friendships were made,
many laughs were had
a few sing songs along the way..
a fabulous fun filled week

It was not about the destination but the journey...
and believe me we've all been on a journey

Tired Touring Tandems and Yellow Submarines


  
A few sleepy heads this morning and a few sore heads... but as you can see from the smiling sunshine faces another tandemfest, ready and raring to go....






Again we sacrificed scenery for road surface, believe me through this week we've become experts in the levels of tarmacadam on roads, or should we say.. "lack of tarmac"! We soldiered on, thank good for padded cycling shorts....


We had a few new Tandem Pilots in Training today also, Brendan, Dave, and Karol ( okay so Karol not so novice) With that we also had some super support, Saul "Lead Out Man" Synott.... as you can see from the picture below, Saul was looking for some extra fuel



Today's route brought us to Donegal Town where we met with some other 99ers' and some members of the Irish Guide Dogs Fundraising team in Donegal... it was great to see Roisin and Kerry back again, hopefully next year you'll both be back on the bikes.. (put support is appreciated too ;) )




Another pit stop for lunch, in Biddy O' Barnes, pictured here all fed and ready to go for the final 35km to home for the evening Letterkenny... we boarded our trusty steads, and Team "Yellow Submarine" were homeword bound...

run ever so smoothly by our marshals once again,
and they didn't even get grumpy with us... see smiles all around....


 

The Bomber's Advice.... Wear Sunscreen

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your legs. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your legs until they've faded, and by then your arse will be killing you as well, But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and the rest of the 99er crew & recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. Bollox! You ARE as fat as you imagine in those tight Lycra shorts.

Don't worry about the hills. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as asking one of the girls to help you with a puncture. The real troubles in your life are getting up the next morning to start another day after you said you will only have “the one” on the night before.

Do one thing every day that scares you… ride on the back of a tandem with Aidan Flynn!

Sing.

Homage to be paid to Pat Kelly and his mouth organ. Do not make Saul agitated.

Floss.

Because its just a good thing to do,

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults and practice on your slagging. Only those with tough skin survive.

Don't be reckless with other people's bikes. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Drink.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Stretch.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Keeps your hands on the hoods, because that break is not as near as you think. Don’t lend your Vaseline tub to anyone, A peloton is your best friend and going solo into a hard wind is never fun. Remember, every hill that goes up must come down. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Because next week you will be crippled and unable to sit down.

Dance, even if your not pissed. You blend in better that way.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them. Jack may not always be there to point the way.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you look gay!

Get to know your co cyclists. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Help them along the way and share an odd yarn. They're your best link to the past years and the people most likely to stick with you for the M2M cycle in 2011.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Malcom is right you are wrong, each day starts at 9, you have to be up at 7, Fries in the morning make you fart and that’s not good if you’re on the back of a tandem. Alcohol makes your head sore but a few hours in the saddle the next day you’ll be fine and next years tour wont be as “cock heavy.”

Respect your elders. Especially if you are out numbered.

Don't expect anyone to push you. They have enough to be worried about. Know that having 10 fingers is a benefit to cycling. Who would have thought? 10 years going strong, a big shout out to Eamon for getting the 99ers off the ground in the first place.

Don't mess too much with your hair, that is, if you are lucky enough to have some….

Be careful whose advice you buy, don’t always believe them when they say we are nearly there. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth. It’s your legs that will get you to your destination, not the advice.

But trust “Da Bomber” on the sunscreen.

Saddle Up









Cheltenham or Castelbar Races....
Riders at the Ready..
Castlebar marked the arrival of Thomas Langan and Joesph Deery, along with it the arrival of the first sing song of the tour.. and hence a late night all around... as a result a number of our cyclists were a bit confused over their transport for today's stage.. Castlebar to Sligo

Thomas saddled up in what is commonly known as "The Yellow Submarine".. while the rest of us were given a briefing on the
"Rules of the Road"

This leg of our Journey took us along the N17, and the Saw Doctors weren't lying when they said "Stone walls and the grass is green"... not much else scenery wise... however on the plus, the road surface was a lot more forgiving on the cyclists behinds.


Today, also saw one of our new tandem pilots take to his second day of tandeming; i was asked politely by Rob last night to capture his tremendous tandeming talents.. aka "action shots".. So Rob, this ones for you...(Rob Ducie pictured here tandeming Tom Kavanagh all the way to Tom's home town of Sligo)



We also had one of our veteran tandem pilots take to the saddle again, with Seamus Kelly as Super Stoker... well done Micky D, even had time to pose for the camera.

Today's stage was a little shorter so we were all looking forward to an earlier finish, however of course we stopped for some much needed refreshments... .. it's all abour Rehydration .. right?..
After lunch, even the headwinds and showers couldn't stop us from the slipstream into sligo.. with John Twomey leading the charge and guiding us home (us all tucked in behind him - including Tandem Pilot Chris and Stoker Tim )  -  negotiating racy roundabounts and grinding through gravel,

Our Maam's - well our Marshals

This trip couldn't run without us being minded by our marshals and mechanics..getting us safe and sound from one end of the country to the other ( sure all we have to do is cycle?!!?) - today's minding was from Galway to Castlebar - via Connemara

Another glorious day in Connemara - not many of those days. We were spoilt with the scenery and not so spoilt with the northerly winds.. alas we battled on...
  
Despite me not being tired of cycling, looks like my back tyre was and after a close encounter with a connemara pot hole - led me to my first puncture of the trip,alas my knight in shining armour Philip to the rescue.. we had it changed in no time - despite us looking very confused here...



Of course..we managed to stop for some breaks too... strike a pose - Are we in the running for Ireland's next top model?? Maybe the scenery not the subjects? ;)

And of course some muuch needed refreshments

After the trauma of my puncture and all... however this led to some confusion on who's bike was who's?

And so we arrived in Castlebar, feeling in fine fettle.. Bring on the Sing Song
